Bill to ban public officer’s children from studying abroad passes second reading

A bill which seeks to prevent children of public office holders from schooling abroad has passed second reading in the Senate.

The bill, if passed, will restrict children of public office holders from schooling abroad except for specialized courses not offered in any of the country’s educational institutions.

The sponsor of the bill, Senator Mohammed Basheer (PDP Kano) said the country’s education sector is confronted with serious challenges and it has become important for the Senate to adopt drastic measures to rescue the ailing educational system.

The bill was among three bills which passed second reading in the Senate on Thursday without being debated.

Another bill which seeks to compel the executive arm of government to implement resolutions passed by the National Assembly, also passed second reading.

One dies in Zaria explosion

One person was on Wednesday killed as an explosive device, exploded on Wednesday night at Sabon Gari in Zaria, Kaduna State.

A witness, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that the incident took place at about 9p.m at the Rendezvous Hotel on Uche Road in Sabon Gari.
He said the incident left several other persons injured.

The security situation in Zaria had deteriorated in the last few days, following the presence of suspected members of Boko Haram in the town.

Confirming the incident, the Army Public Relations Officer, Depot Nigerian Army, Capt. Ibrahim Abdullahi, said security agencies had already rallied round to take control of the situation.
He, however, said the extent of damages done by the explosion was yet to be ascertained.

Police recover Maryam Abacha’s N20 million stolen jewellery

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday said that the police have recovered stolen jewellery worth N20 million belonging to Maryam Abacha, wife to Nigeria’s former military Head of State.

Mr Idris said that one of the suspects who bought some of the jewellery was arrested and his arrest led to the discovery of the remaining items.

The case of the stolen jewellery is before a court in Kano and one of Mrs Abacha’s domestic staff is being accused of stealing the jewellery.
The police commissioner said that the jewellery were now in custody of the police as investigation into the matter continued.

More Than 100 Suspects Arrested Over Mubi Killings

 

A source yesterday said security agencies have arrested over 100 suspects, including students, in Mubi and adjoining communities over Tuesday’s killing of 25 people, many of whom were students of the Federal Polytechnic and the School of Health Technology, Mubi in Adamawa State.

Although the Adamawa State Police Command refused to give the exact number of those arrested and their identity saying that doing so at this stage would jeopardise investigation, a source within the security circle said over a hundred suspects had been arrested as hunt for the killers continue. A source in the students’ affairs unit of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi also said one of those killed was among the newly elected executive members of the Student Union Government.

Update On Students Killed In Mubi, Adamawa State

According to some residents of Mubi, the shootings started about 11p.m. and lasted for more than one hour. Some of the victims were also stabbed to death. An official in the Information and Protocol Unit of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, who did not want his name mentioned, said that 26 students of the institution were among those killed in the attacks.

But an eyewitness said that over 40 male corpses, mostly students, were reportedly counted in the Wuro-Fatuji area, while scores that sustained gunshot wounds were said to be in serious condition.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a fake soldier, Samuel Johnson, for impersonation.

According to the authorities of the command, Johnson was arrested on September 17, 2012, in full military uniform with the rank of lance corporal. He claimed to be member of the Nigerian Army attached to Ojo Cantonment, Lagos.

Baby Found Dead Near A Refuse Dump In Gowon Estate

Residents of the area woke up early this morning to find a new born baby stone dead near a refuse dump right before the entrance of Gowon Estate at Ponle bus stop. The new born was left there alive because two women later said they heard the cries of a baby in the early hours of this morning as they headed to the market but didn't know where it was coming from.

The baby was left there naked to battle the cold for hours. He sadly died before anyone even realized he was there. I don;t know which one is worse, abortion on this dastard act. There's no reason for any woman to do this to a child..no reason! Photos when you continue...

FIFA ranking: Super Eagles drop to 13th in Africa

World’s football governing body, FIFA has released its rankings for the month of October, and the Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped five spots on the rankings and are now 63rd in the world.

The team also dropped out of the top 10 to now occupy the 13th position in Africa, coming after Cape Verde and Central African Republic. Elephants of Cote’ d Ivoire remain the highest ranked African team on the list; they occupy the 16th position in the world and number one on the continent. Algeria, Mali, Ghana and Egypt follow in that order, making it up the top five, while African champions, Zambia are in sixth position and are 41 in the world. Police kill teenager on Independence Day in Bayelsa

The Independence Day anniversary recorded a tragedy in Bayelsa State as the police allegedly killed a 16-year-old boy along Hospital Road in Yenagoa.

Police patrol teams were immediately withdrawn from the metropolis on Tuesday shortly after the killing.

The killing of the boy, whose identity could not be ascertained, increased to three, the number of persons allegedly shot dead by the police in the past two months.

Independence Day bombing: Henry Okah’s trial begins in South Africa

The trial of the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta (MEND) and alleged mastermind of the October 1, 2010 bombing in Abuja, Mr Henry Okah, began on Monday, in South Africa.

Mr Okah is facing a 15-count charge for the twin bomb blast that killed more than 10 people in the nation’s capital during the elaborate celebration of the nation’s 50^th independence anniversary, on October 1, 2010.

20 Students Shot Dead in Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, Adamawa

At least 20 students of Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, Adamawa State, were shot dead last night by unknown gunmen. The men invaded the off-campus student hostel around 11 last night, rounded some students up, lined them up, asked a few questions and then separated the students into two groups. One group was allowed to go and the other group, with about 20 students, were all shot dead - execution style.

Students in the hostel have started leaving for fear of another attack. The school is yet to issue a statement about the murders.

Gunmen blow up Anambra hotel, kill two policemen

Gunmen on Monday shot and killed two policemen on patrol at Abor Akuzor, Umusoime, Nkpor in Anambra State.

Some other policemen on patrol with the cops were also injured in the incident.

The policemen were said to be attached to the Ogidi Police Station, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The offer was made when Gigi Chao entered a civil partnership with her girlfriend of seven years in a ceremony in Paris five months ago. It has sparked a deluge of offers, Ms Chao 33, speaking on Thursday, said that she had received about 200 proposals and the number of people following her on facebook, twitter and youtube had increased by 1500 since her father's announcement.

"People are contacting me facebook, on twitter, by email. It's ridiculous. I can't sort out the genuine proposal from from the half-heart ones. I can't make head or tail,"
