Former President George H. W. Bush has been hospitalized in The
Methodist Hospital in Houston for the past week with what his staff
confirms is bronchitis and a chronic cough.
Jim McGrath, a Bush spokesman, told ABC News that the 88-year-old former president has not developed pneumonia or any life-threatening condition and is expected to be released over the coming weekend. Bush is “sitting up, moving and walking as much as he can to help his recovery,” Dr. Amy Mynderse, an internal medicine physician in charge of his care, said in a hospital news release.

Two car bombers had on Sunday struck at the St. Andrew Military Protestant Church inside the prestigious Armed Forces Command and Staff College, in Jaji, near Kaduna. The college houses the officers and men of the Infantry Centre and School as well as the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre .
Also on Monday, gunmen, numbering 40, launched an attack on the office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja, where suspects were being held. Two policemen and one of the gunmen were killed in the incident.

Zulai, the first daughter of former Head of State and a former

Fashola arrests policeman riding Okada on restricted road
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, arrested a police officer who rode his 100 CC commercial motorcycle on the Agege Motor Road, Ikeja in defiance of the traffic law.
It would be recalled that the state governor, on August 2, signed into law the road traffic law which restricted the activities of Okada operators on 475 roads in the metropolis.

He was hit by a stray bullet on Saturday, 24th of Nov. on his way to church at Sango Ota during a robbery incident.
His family members have described him as a gentle, easy going man, Miss. Titilayo, one of his course mates said he was a fine, small but very intelligent and vibrant man.
He will be greatly missed by all, she said. He was laid to rest today in his hometown. May his soul rest in peace.

Boko Haram writes FG asking for dialogue
The Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, has distributed a letter requesting dialogue with the Federal Government.
The letter, which was sent through head
of journalists in Borno State, Aba Kakami, came less than 72 hours
after a double suicide bombing led to the death of at least 17 people
at the Protestant Military Church, Armed Forces Command and Staff
College in Jaji, Kaduna State.
Kakami has often received and distributed statements from the sect.

Gunmen on Monday attacked the premises of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Abuja freeing prisoners and killing two police officers.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, who said the attack on SARS compound began around 2am on Monday, with a “large number” of gunmen killing the officers and allowing about 30 prisoners inside the facility to escape.

The mother of the dead girls, identified as Mrs Coker, a widow, who was brought out of the debris alive was, however, in coma yesterday. Affected were flats 2, 4 and 6 of the six flat low-cost houses built over 30 years ago.
The building, Block M20, according to eye witnesses started showing cracks and sinking over a year ago. The tragic incident as gathered, occurred at about midnight causing a deafening sound.

Unilorin offers courses in Chinese language
The University of Ilorin on Tuesday said it would commence teaching of Chinese (Mandarin) language.
The University, which resolved the issue at its 23rd meeting of the Senate held in Ilorin, said that preparation for the take off of the course was in the pipe line.
The University’s Director, Corporate Affairs Department, Mr Idris Akogun, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the introduction of Mandarin was to prepare students for a fast changing global and political economy.
He said that the university would teach Mandarin as one of the foreign languages learnt in the institution.
He added that apart from Nigerian languages, the university also offered instructions at degree and non degree level in foreign languages.
“These languages are French, German and Spanish. Mandarin is the latest addition of the languages to be taught at Unilorin,’’ he said.

Police in India have arrested a woman they say criticised on Facebook the shutdown of the city of Mumbai after the death of politician Bal Thackeray.
A woman friend who “liked” the comment was also arrested, they said.

WIDESPREAD condemnation Monday trailed the killing at the weekend of Dr. Toyin Hamzat, a former Chairman of Ikeja Local Council. He was also a former aide to Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and before that, of his predecessor, Bola Tinubu.
He was reportedly shot in the head at Sabo, Sagamu, Ogun State, at about 9.00 p.m. on Sunday after leaving Sagamu Town Club where he had gone for a meeting and was heading for his country home in Ijebu-Aiyepe, Odogbolu Local Council.

FG Suspends Bi-Courtney’s Lagos-Ibadan road contract
The government said they terminated the contract 'as a result of serial breaching of the terms' of the deal by Bi-Courtney. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) in May 2009 awarded the concessionaire contract for the expressway for 25 years to Bi-Courtney, which was expected to upgrade the highway with over N80 billion and recoup the investment by tolling the road, but they couldn't deliver.
The contract has been awarded to both Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and R.C.C Nigeria Limited, and they have been directed to commence work immediately on the road.
